Lightning kills three of a family

LIGHTNING STRUCK a family in a village near Manpur in Mhow tehsil on Monday afternoon killing three and seriously injuring four others.

At about 2 pm on Monday there was heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning and more than half-inch rainfall was recorded in less than half an hour.

The crackle of lightning was heard all over the tehsil and it struck at Naharkhedi village of the tribal belt near Manpur. Sources said three members of a family including Reshambai (32) wife of Narsingh, Ramu (12) son of Mangilal and Suman daughter of Raju were killed instantaneously due to severe burns. Four of their relatives received serious burns.

The injured were Sumitra (10) daughter of Narsingh, Ashok (12) son of Narsingh, Rani (six) daughter of Mangilal and Galiya (nine) son of Mangilal. They were rushed to Dr Ambedkar Civil Hospital, Mhow, from where they were referred to MY Hospital, Indore. According to eyewitnesses, the injured were saved due to prompt action by Mhow SDM John Kingsley, who rushed an ambulance to the spot soon after hearing of the incident.

Kingsley also spoke to senior officials and got sanction of Rs 10,000 for kin of all victims. Kingsley visited village Naharkhedi at about 3 pm and handed over the money to the families and shared their grief. Talking to Hindustan Times, Kingsley said the government had sanctioned Rs 10,000 as immediate assistance to the affected families and Rs 50,000 will be given to each victim’s family later.
