A TEAM of excise department unearthed a liquor smuggling racket and recovered 26 cartons of English liquor being smuggled from Jharkhand here on Sunday. Two persons were arrested in this connection.
The arrested persons were identified as Ramratan Yadav, a resident of Dhina in Chandauli district, and Indrajeet, a resident of Jalalpur in Jaunpur district.
The excise department got information that some smugglers were on their way to smuggle English liquor from Jharkhand in Varanasi. Acting on a tip-off, excise department sleuths laid a trap near Harahua Bazar on Sunday morning. They saw a Tata Sumo coming from opposite direction. The excise sleuth stopped the vehicle. During checking, they recovered 26 cartons of English liquor.
Deputy Commissioner of Excise department, KR Sonkar said that these bottles of English Liquor had been made specially for sale in Jharkhand state and was illegally transported into Varanasi. He said that a special team has been formed to check the smuggling of liquors in Varanasi.
Woman’s suicide bid: A 22-YEAR-OLD married woman made a futile attempt to commit suicide by jumping into the Ganga at Dr Rajendra Prasad Ghat here on Sunday. The locals caught the woman before she could jump into the river. She was later handed over to her parents.
The reason for the step was stated to be the separation of the woman from her husband. According to information, the woman identified as Rinky, a resident of Misir Pokhra area under the Dashwaswamedh police station, had been married to a youth of Parao area in Chandauli a few years back. Since some time, the husband had established relations with another woman. Following this, Rinky, had been living with her parents at Misir Pokhra. Fed up with the setback, she tried to commit suicide.
