IN A major haul, Indore police seized over Rs 9 lakh worth of smuggled IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) that was being transported in a mini truck. The truck driver has been arrested and further investigations are on.
To camouflage the smell the liquor was hidden under sacks of onion. However, the police had received a tip-off about the liquor and were carrying out a checking drive on the outskirts of the City. At around midnight, personnel manning the check post set up by the Chandan Nagar police saw a mini truck (MH0-7904) approaching the barrier. In a highly suspicious manner, the driver tried to avoid the barrier by taking the side road.
This prompted the police to stop the vehicle and on checking they found it filled with sacks of onion. However, when they removed some of the sacks, they found hidden below cartons of liquor.
The police arrested truck driver Lakhvir Singh (48) son of Bawa Singh, a resident of Brahmapuri Colony. There were 278 cartons of liquor in the truck worth Rs 9.02 lakh. While 200 cartons were of premium range IMFL, the remaining was of medium range IMFL.
Most of the premium range liquor was ‘Legend’ whisky, which is worth around Rs 600 in the open market. During preliminary interrogation, the driver said he had loaded the liquor from a place in Malviya Nagar, Bhopal, and was taking it to Gujarat. He also told the police that the liquor belonged to one Jailwal. The police are trying to establish the veracity of his statements.
