AS PER the directives of Election Commission (EC), the next updated voter list will contain miniature black and white photographs of voters against their names. The photographs will be scanned from the photo identity cards issued to 9.45 lakh voters out of district’s 16.74 lakh voters. The photographs of remaining voters will be taken while issuing photo I cards to them.
The updated voter list, however, will be subjected to constant revision. EC issued two directives this year. One, registration officers could accept application for inclusion of new names in voter list on any day. Secondly, Booth Level Officers would go out in the field and update the voter list.
Besides, EC has directed all state Chief Electoral Officers to ensure issuance of photo identity cards to all voters by early 2008 when Vidhan Sabha elections would be held in the State later in the year.
But, before that, a door-to door verification of the voters will be held so that those who were issued photo cards in 1996-97 and 2003 could be retrieved from the voter list. This would save government expense of issuing a double I card to each voter.
MP Electronics Development Corporation Limited (MPEDCL) has been made the nodal agency for issuance of photo I cards in the State.
The Corporation has successfully completed a software trial run in Sehore district to know glitches emerging in way of retrieving the names, matching the voter list with those who have received it and framing a format of photo I card application forms and other details.
MPEDCL plans execute it throughout the State by contracting a firm. State Chief Electoral Officer G M Mathur will hold a meeting in Bhopal on January 15 on Sehore model where election officers from all districts are expected to take part.
