Live beyond self

If you look around, nobody seems to be happy with his job. Everybody wants to reach higher and acquire more status and money. No harm in that. But, if that becomes the only obsession of your life, then you are missing something in this precious short life.
Just take a long breath, and think calmly. In this rat race, many of us forget our inner self, and what unique qualities each one of us is gifted with. We have become constricted in our thinking and are looking only at short term gains. We have stopped taking a holistic view of life, which is beautiful.
So, what should be our aim in life? Won’t it be better to be a good human being and try to give back to society? As an ex-army man, the best thing I have learnt is the experience of the joy of giving back to the nation. Our aim has to be beyond us.
For that, we need to evolve ourselves. We must stand out as individuals with our own convictions and not follow the herd. I have seen many people who have devoted their lives, educating the poorest children, free of cost in rural areas. There are also a number of unsung heroes who are quietly working for the education of tribal children, development of villages, environment and wildlife conservation etc. And they all believe in giving, not in taking.
We must remind ourselves that what is important is humane qualities. We must build these values in our children, and then leave them to choose their passion of life.
Maybe, many of them, will land up doing something innovative which can enrich the quality of life of the ’aam aadmi’ who makes for the maximum links in the chain known as India.
