Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed “immense satisfaction” on Saturday with his government’s performance in the last two years, saying the NDA administration clamped down on corruption that was once eating into India’s vitals like termites.
“Corruption has stopped…not just for a year but forever…This is just the beginning. A new dawn,” he said at a star-studded event on the lawns of Delhi’s India Gate.
Modi said the NDA’s work should be evaluated against that of the previous government and cited a series of scams during the UPA regime to draw a contrast.
“It is obvious in the past 15 days that there is ‘vikaswad’ (development-ism) on the one side and ‘virodhwad’ (obstructionism) on the other. Between the two, the people can see the truth,” he said.
He listed a series of steps that ended corruption and saved money, including plugging leakages in cooking gas subsidy, rooting out fake ration cards, and scrapping fictitious teaching posts, among others. “Leakages worth `36,000 crore have stopped,” he said.
“Some say you work so hard. Why do people oppose you? Modi has stopped `36,000 crore that used to go into some people’s pockets. Modi gaali nahin khayega to kya (what else but abuses would Modi get?),” said the PM.
The government’s celebrations underscore the BJP’s impressive performance in recently concluded assembly elections in four states.
The saffron party wrested power in Assam for the first time and expanded its footprint in West Bengal and Kerala.
Modi was speaking at the end of a five-hour televised mega show to showcase his government’s achievements.
He said that over the past 15 days, his government’s work was carefully scrutinized and in the process, the administration got “renewed enthusiasm”.
“Those who were earlier looting the nation are not enthused by this government,” he said.
Modi said that if he were to talk about the achievements of his government, Doordarshan will have to be on for a whole week.
Before the PM, Union ministers showcased their achievements and leading names from Bollywood, including Amitabh Bachchan, espoused social causes.
A range of government initiatives including Swachh Bharat, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Pradhan Mantrai Ujjawala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana were highlighted as well as moves to boost farm income and infrastructure.
The event was held in a ‘talkathon’ format with ministers answering queries put to them.
Media was not invited to the event, which was screened live on various channels of Doordarshan.
Discussions were in studio format and interspersed with some light entertainment in the form of songs and dances.
The ‘breaks’ in between discussions featured consumer awareness advertisements and the NDA government’s theme song on completing two years in office — “Mera desh badal raha hai” (my country is changing).
