Lok Janshakti party MLA Nagina Devi had a narrow escape when she was fired at in Bihar's Sitamarhi district on Monday night, police said.
Her bodyguard, Ramji Ram, suffered pellet injury in the firing by a group, suspected to be supporters of Bijendra Yadav, panchayat head of Kaswa near Riga, police said.
DIG (Tirhut range) Arvind Pandey said the incident was apparently a fallout of a scuffle between the MLA's son Manoj Kumar and Bijendra Yadav during an inquiry by the Deputy Development Commissioner Ajit Kumar Singh into alleged irregularities committed by the panchayat head in distribution of foodgrains meant for last year's flood victims.
The MLA's son picked a quarrel with Yadav and then allegedly exchanged fisticuffs with him in the presence of the DDC. Enraged, a group of men, allegedly supporters of Bijendra Yadav, intercepted the MLA's convoy when she was on her way to attend a marriage at Riga.
As Nagina Devi got down from her vehicle, someone in the crowd opened fire and injured her bodyguard. Local people assembled and the assailants fled the scene. Nagina Devi told PTI she was attacked for raising the alleged misdeeds of Bijendra Yadav in relief distribution in the assembly. Her bodyguard has been shifted to Patna Medical College Hospital.
