A metropolitan magistrate court in Ahmedabad on Friday issued a bailable warrant against Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar.
This is the second time that the court has issued a warrant against Patkar.
The court was acting on a defamation case filed against Patkar by a city-based NGO, National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL).
NCCL President V K Saxena filed the suit against Patkar after she, in a television interview in 2006, alleged that he was “getting civil contracts from the Sardar Sarovar Namada Nigal Limited (SSNNL)”.
The same court had, on January 27, issued an arrest warrant against Patkar, directing Badwani police to arrest and produce her in court.
The police inspector, however, in his report submitted to the court, said he had visited Patkar’s residence in Madhya Pradesh and was told that she no longer stays there.
However, advocate appearing for the complainant contended that Patkar was a “habitual offender” and there were instances where she had “ignored” the summons and orders issued by the court.
