The Amarnath Shrine Board has blamed global warming for the shrinkage of the Shivalingam, which stood 12 feet on June 18, to 4 feet on June 28. But it is human intervention that has aggravated the problem. In 1989 12,000 pilgrims visited the Amarnath cave. This number rose to nearly 4 lakh in 2006. This year, even before the actual yatra begins on June 30, nearly 50,000 persons, belonging to service personnel families and of VIPs, have visited the cave. People are allowed to crowd inside the cave and light incense sticks. To shift the burden onto global warming and to ignore their own role into exacerbating the process is irresponsible.
