NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul today described Pranab Mukherjee's election as President of India as a great victory of a person who is well respected for his maturity and impartiality.
In a message, Lord Paul said it would be a fitting culmination to the distinguished career of the Congress veteran.
"It is a great victory of a person who had a very distinguished career in politics having been in charge of most of the portfolios in the Government and well respected for his maturity and impartiality.
"For the sake of the nation, it is a great end to his distinguished career," he said.
Mukherjee was elected to succeed Pratibha Patil as India's next President today.
"As President he will play a great role especially when the Indian political scene will have coalition in future times because the stability of the country will require a very distinguished and politically mature person.
"The way he has received votes and support not only from the Congress party but also members of the UPA and some of the opposition parties is a tribute to the trust people have shown in him. We wish him all the success".
Mukherjee will be sworn in as the 13th President of India on July 25.
