If a Goa court refuses to extend former Congress chief minister Digambar Kamat’s anticipatory bail, then the Goa crime branch is most likely to arrest him on Friday in the Louis Berger bribery case.

The development comes a day after former public works department minister in Kamat’s cabinet Churchill Alemao was arrested by the Goa crime branch.

Alemao who was arrested from his residence in Varca village at 10.30 pm on Wednesday, was produced before a sessions court which has remanded him to four days of police custody. Kartik Kashyap, superintendent of police (Goa crime branch), confirmed the development but refused to divulge any further details as Alemao’s interrogation was in progress.

But police sources said that the crime branch was all geared up to arrest Kamat if his bail was not continued. Crime branch officials claimed that Alemao's role in accepting the bribe is established, which is why he has been arrested for further investigation.

Both Kamat and Alemao have earlier been questioned by crime branch in connection with the Louis Berger bribery case.

Kamat along with Alemao has been accused of accepting bribes to the tune of $976,630 from Louis Berger officials to implement a Rs 1,031-crore Water Augmentation and Sewerage pipeline project under Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Goa crime branch earlier arrested JICA Goa Project Director Anand Wachasunder and former Vice President of Louis Berger Satyakam Mohanty in connection with the bribery case.

Police sources said there are chances that Anand Wachasunder would be made an approver in the case to make the case watertight against the politicians.
