LS passes rail interim budget as Oppn cries foul

Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha has passed the interim rail budget envisaging an annual plan of Rs 64,305 crore, with a budgetary support of Rs 30, 223 crore (including Rs 1223 crore as fuel cess) amidst persistent din over the Telangana issue, leaving Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj wondering “what kind of a government” was being run, when UPA ministers were themselves seen as raising slogans.

Railways minister Mallikarjun Kharge moved the Supplementary Demands for Grants (Railways) 2013-14 and Appropriation (Railways) Bill, 2014. These were passed by a voice vote even as agitating BJP members protested that the rail budget had catered mainly to the interests of the Congress party.

In a statement holding political connotations relating to the Third Front prospects, SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav seized the opportunity to shower praise on JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar as the “only Railways Minister to have made efforts to improve rail infrastructure in his constituency of Mainpuri.”
