After serving two years, Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Island Ram Kapse has resigned from his post due to ill health.

Kapse, who is currently undergoing treatment at Mumbai, has sent his resignation letter to the President on May 30, secretary to LG, Udit Roy said.

Kapse has not been keeping well for quite some time and he has been out of Andaman and Nicobar for more than four months for treatment, he said.

Seventy-year-old Kapse had initially gone to Chennai on February two for treatment and later shifted to Mumbai, his hometown, where he is undergoing treatment.

During the absence of Kapse, Lt Governor of Pondicherry Lt General (Retd) Madan Mohan Lakhera has been given additional charge of LG of Andaman and Nicobar on February 12.

Kapse, a former BJP MP, was appointed as the LG of Andaman and Nicobar on January 5, 2004, and served at the post for little over two years before his poor health forced him to resign.

Kapse had played a very active role in the relief and rehabilitation process after tsunami tragedy in December 2004 in which the archipelago has been badly hit and thousands of islanders died.
