Four Indian children will be cheering Ronaldinho and Beckham along with thousands of soccer fans at the FIFA World Cup in Germany. The lucky four kids are part of the ‘FIFA Fair Play Flag Bearers’ who will watch the action live during the league matches of the World Cup.
These children were selected after a nationwide search spanning 1,200 schools. Shreshth Shah from Kolkata, Ajiteshwar Singh from New Delhi, Sachit Kamlesh Yadav from Mumbai and PS Sudarshan from Bangalore were judged on the basis of their passion, skill and knowledge of the game.
“We were selected on the basis of our creativity and football skills,” explains Ajiteshwar, a Class X student. The World Cup is to be held from June 9 to July 9. “We were asked questions about our reaction to a great goal or missing an important penalty,” he adds.
For Sudharshan visiting Germany is nothing new. He is a regular player with the Tsu Hornau Club in Germany. Announcing the winners, Jose Ramirez Barretto, Mahindra United’s Brazilian player said, “These kids would get a chance to walk on the football ground and experience the World Cup from the centre of the pitch. They will also get a chance to stand with their heroes and listen to 60,000 people sing the national anthems of the teams.”
“Being a footballer, I can vouch for the excitement one feels standing with one’s favourite stars at the centre of a football ground,” he added.
