CAMPAIGNING FOR the second phase of the three-tier urban local bodies poll ended today, bring a sense of relief to the people living in sheer cacophony in the ‘affected’ areas. Polling for election of mayors in 11 nagar nigams and chairmen in 24 nagar palika parishad is scheduled for Tuesday.
State Election Commission (SEC) officials said a total of 91,02,194 voters would cast their vote for election of mayor in Lucknow, Meerut, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur (Nagar), Jhansi, Allahabad and Gorakhpur. The SEC has postponed the poll in Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam to November 3.
Besides mayors, the voters will go for election of corporators in 900 wards of the 11 cities. The SEC has established 2536 polling centres and 9246 polling booths. While 753 booths have been declared sensitive, another 828 booths have been marked as extra sensitive.
Similarly, 13,16,746 voters will cast their vote in 13 districts, including Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Mirzapur and Sonebhadra for election of chairmen and members of nagar palika parishads.
In these districts, 483 polling centres and 1435 polling booths have been set up. Altogether 160 polling booths have been declared sensitive and 257 booths extra sensitive. The SEC has also planned to hold poll for election of nagar panchayats in Ghaziabad and Jyotiba Phule Nagar.
Meanwhile, the SEC has ordered re-poll at 72 polling booths located in Kannauj, Muzaffarnagar, Buduan, Sitapur, Rampur, Balrampur, Etawah, Jalaun, Hardoi, Ferozabad and Saharanpur.
Polling in these districts was held on Saturday.
Giving this information, additional election commissioner Vinay Priya Dubey said the SEC had ordered re-poll in the booths on which high percentage of polling had been recorded and complaints of irregularity lodged with the district magistrate. The SEC too had received complaints of booth capturing and rigging. Re-poll at all the booths would be held on October 31.
The SEC has also ordered re-poll in ward number three of Bilgram Nagar Panchayat located in Hardoi district. Instead of bicycle, the SP candidate was allotted hand pump symbol on the ballot paper.
District Magistrate of Gonda has urged the SEC to hold re-poll at all the 83 booths in nagar palika parishad. Voting at these booths was held on Saturday. DM ON Mishra in his report has said that incidents of booth capturing, violence were reported at several spots. The candidates even tried to fan communal passion during campaign, Mishra said.
Dubey said the SEC was awaiting the report of election observer Amit Mohan Prasad in this connection. The SEC was also awaiting the report of observers deputed in Shahjahanpur and Hardoi where complaints of irregularities had been made.
