With a view to discourage consumption of tobacco, Madhya Pradesh government has banned organisers of
Navratri festival from accepting advertisements of tobacco products, a press release issued said.

District Collectors have been asked to inform the organisers of the forthcoming nine-day festival that they
should not display advertisements of tobacco products like Pan Masala or accept sponsorship from tobacco companies,
Commissioner, Health, J N Kansotia said.

Guidelines released by the government said that the organisers should not allow smoking within the pandals where
the festivities are conducted and display boards to this effect should be installed. Those found defying the ban would
be slapped a fine of Rs 200.

As per guidelines, if the organisers do not take action against those breaking the rules, the district administration
would be free to fine the organisers.

Officers of the district administration would inspect the premises to ensure the guidelines are followed, the press
note said.
