Additional police force was rushed to Chhatarpur town on Sunday after reports of communal tension following recovery of a slaughtered cow from the courtyard of a house in Shuklana locality.
As the news spread, markets closed down and there was palpable tension as large number of people including leaders of different political parties and Hindu outfits started assembling at the spot.
Panicky shopkeepers put shutters of their shops down but timely intervention by the police saved the situation from deteriorating further. Additional force was rushed from neighbouring districts of Panna, Sagar and Damoh to assist the police and administration at Chhatarpur.
However, heavy police force continues to patrol to town, though some markets in the town opened in the evening. Range IG Pankaj Shrivastava said that tension prevailed at Chhatarpur town after a dead cow was found lying in the courtyard of house at Shuklana in morning.
A case has been registered against unidentified persons and investigation is going on. District SP has also announced a reward of Rs 5,000 for information about persons involved in cow slaughter.
