Do you feel your creativity is taking a beating when you end up throwing some more sequined cushions or place some carved photo frames in the name of decorating the home? If yes, then how about slipping in some mosaic décor items in your living area?
“Mosaic is a decorative art of laying together small pieces of coloured glass, stone, pebbles etc, to create a design or a pattern or a picture. From just being a medium to enhance the look of the flooring, it has evolved to culminate into various décor items,” says Max Francesconi of Sicis. Mosaic being a high-end product doesn’t mean it has an inert market. “The market will grow as it can create a custom decor specific to the requirement of the owner. It’s unique and a visual treat,” adds product designer Chetan Sorab.
“One can have mosaic light balls, a bathtub covered with mosaic, mannequins, animal figures and statues dressed in glass mosaic, wall mirrors with mosaic frames and last but not least, one can get a larger-than-life self-portrait in mosaic too,” says Francesconi.
“We have been playing with a textile interpretation of mosaic for some time — an image of a mosaic cushion. We are developing cushions which will pick up on a mosaic through the use of stones,” says Mandeep Nagi of Shades Of India. “Mosaic items are not limited to just wall hangings, and the price doesn’t need to burn a hole in the pocket. Prices vary from Rs 700 for basic materials, going up to Rs 60,000 per sq/ft,” adds Francesconi.
