Withdraw the letter of appreciation given to the Maharajganj police and punish them for laxity that allowed the mob to kill 10 persons.

This was the reaction of the natives of Digahi village on Saturday who witnessed the worst carnage on Thursday. Blaming the cops for the massacre, villager Kamal (70) said superintendent of police VK Shekhar and SHO of Tuthibari police station VK Singh were present along with the police force when frenzied mob set the house of Ayodhya Dubey on fire leaving 10 dead.

Digahi has virtually turned into a ghost village as fearing arrest a majority of the villagers have fled along with families.

On Thursday, gram pradhan Deenanath Singh was allegedly killed by Dubey brothers— Ayodhya, Dwarika, Krishna Kumar and Dhirendra. To avenge the death, his supporters torched the house of Ayodhya. Later in a crackdown, the police nabbed 50 villagers.

Praising the effort of the SP, divisional commissioner K Ravindra Nayak on Thursday announced letters of appreciation for the SP and SHO for rescuing three persons trapped in the house. The appreciation of the cops further irked the villagers. Rampyare Singh (65) said the SP and SHO were aware of the enmity between Dubeys and Singhs. The murder of the gram pradhan as well as family of Dubey was planned, he said.
