Train services were affected for around four hours on the Vaishali to Anand Vihar Metro-route on Friday.
This was the third such delay on line 4 of the Delhi Metro rail network, in less than a month. The previous delays were reported on December 20, 2011 and January 2 earlier this month due to over head electrification maintenance.
A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson said that Friday’s problem was due to routine maintenance, which was carried out for over four hours, from 11am to 3pm. Due to the maintenance, trains plied on a single line between Anand Vihar and Vaishali section after every 13-14 minutes as against the normal schedule of after five minutes.
“This particular maintenance on the Ghaziabad section has become a regular feature. A majority of passengers who use this route either have to travel to Anand Vihar or take some alternative transport mode to reach their destination,” said Babita Saxena, an Indirapuram resident.
DMRC officials, however, said that maintenance was necessary.
“We made proper announcements at stations for the benefit of passengers. This normal maintenance procedure had to be carried out, as we did not get sufficient time during the night. We are hopeful that no further delays will occur in the coming days,” the spokesperson added.
The single line connects two stations at Vaishali and Kaushambi to Anand Vihar.
The section caters to over 40,000 passengers on a daily basis.
The DMRC spokesperson added that the normal frequency of trains was restored by 3pm on Friday, after maintenance work was completed.
