The state BJP leadership’s decision to rope in the RSS men Makhan Singh and Bhagwatsharan Mathur in the election affairs at this juncture is apparently to clip the wings of general secretary (organisation) Arvind Menon given growing resentment among party workers against him.
Makhan Singh has been state BJP general secretary (organisation), while Mathur and Menon had been associated with him as joint general secretaries till a few years back. At the time of 2008 assembly elections, Makhan Singh and Mathur had played an important role in the organisation in the capacity of general secretary (organisation).
The party sources said the RSS was worried when reports started coming in against Menon about his allegedly courting controversies from time to time.
What perpetrated the crisis for him was an affidavit purportedly by a Jabalpur woman levelling scandalous allegations against him. Though Jabalpur police said the whereabouts of the complainant woman couldn’t be traced out.
His role in intra-party rivalries in Indore, Bhopal and certain other parts of the state was also questioned within the party. As per sources, the party leaders regularly received feedback from the districts about not only Menon’s but certain district unit general secretaries’ (organisation) questionable style of functioning. It was when the party’s national general secretary (organisation) Ramlal put his foot down at the request of the state BJP leaders and made it clear that organisation secretaries (sangthan mantra) will not have any role to play in ticket distribution. Recently, it was also made clear that there would be no money distribution through them.
During the chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Jan Ashirvad Yatra, Chouhan got regular feedback about Menon’s and several other organisation secretaries’ injudicious attitude towards the party workers leading to resentment among them at a time when the party leaders want to keep the workers in good humour and motivate them to work wholeheartedly for the party.
As per party sources, Menon’s speeches for quite some time acquired the overtures of a politician and he was taking least interest in his main role like ironing out differences among various factions in the party and motivate them to work for the party.
To the contrary, said the sources, Makhan Singh and Mathur have widely travelled the state and are known for their down-to-earth approach towards the party workers.
Their main role would be to pacify the party workers who are upset with the government and the organisation for some reason or the other.
“Menon ji has been talking of ICU, ICCU, operation and other hospital terminologies in respect with the Congress but the fact is this decision has been taken to ensure the BJP doesn’t go to ICCU for actions and decisions of some of its office-bearers”, said a senior party leader.
Talking to Hindustan Times, the state BJP media in-charge Dr Hitesh Bajpai, however, said nothing should be read between the lines. He said the party engaged all those party leaders in the election affairs who had been associated with the party in some way or the other. In fact, the party did not want to leave any stone unturned to fulfill its mission 2013.
