A Malaysian tourist on a visit to India was allegedly molested by her tour guide during a trip to Agra.
The woman was staying at a five-star hotel in Delhi and had taken a three-day Agra-Fatehpur Sikri-Jaipur Golden Triangle tour organised by Travelite India Private Limited on January 23.
Following her complaint, the Delhi Police registered a Zero FIR (that can be registered anywhere in India irrespective of where the crime took place) and have forwarded details to Agra police.
"We reached Agra at about 2:00 pm on January 23, where I was introduced to the local Travelite Tour guide Vineet Jon," the victim wrote in the FIR (no 00/07).
The victim further alleged that the tour guide claimed that he was qualified Ayurvedic masseur and also showed her his certificates. "After the day’s tour, he gave me his phone number asking me to call in case I needed a massage," the victim said. She alleged that although she forgot to call the guide, he rang her and came to her room.
In her complaint, the victim said that while massaging, the guide made sexual advances at her. "He said that he felt uncomfortable and asked if he could remove his clothes. I jumped up and asked him to leave immediately. He remained cool and refused to leave," she further wrote. The guide allegedly left when the tourist threatened to inform the hotel authorities.
What next happened was more shocking, said the victim. She informed the Travelite agent in Agra, who allegedly told her not to relate the incident to anyone and promised to dismiss the guide. The victim immediately returned to Delhi and complained to the Travelite counter, "The lady at the counter told me that she will refund Rs 5,000 for not completing the trip. She further told me that the Travelite officials found a slip that had Vineet Jon’s number from my Agra hotel room and said that it was my fault," the victim wrote.
The victim emphatically wrote that, "Mr Vineet Jon came to my room with my permission, but he outraged my modesty and sexually assaulted me without my consent."
The Travelite officials confirmed the incident but denied that that the tourist guide was their employee. "The Malaysian lady said that she was not happy with the trip and wanted refund of the entire amount. She also harassed my staff and threatened to go to the police. The tour guide against whom she has levelled such allegations is not our employee," said Birender Singh, CEO of Travelite.
The Connaught Place police questioned the Travelite officials in Delhi. "We have forwarded the details to the Agra police," said DCP, New Delhi, Anand Mohan.
