At least seven people were injured when the lintel of an under-construction mall in Sector 3 Vaishali, in Ghaziabad, caved in on Wednesday.
The injured were reportedly taken to a private hospital in Kaushambi. All the injured were labourers who were working in the mall when the incident happened. The condition of at least three labourers is said to be serious.
“There are no casualties as of now,” senior superintendent of police Deepak Ratan said. Unconfirmed reports, however, said the number of labourers injured in the incident could be more than 10, as a huge work force was present at the site.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place at about 7.30 p.m. at the construction site of Mahagun Metro Mall. Police said the lintel of the basement of the mall was being laid when it suddenly caved in. There were at least seven people working there who were trapped in the debris.
A large quantity of construction mixture was kept at one place and the under-construction lintel caved in under the weight of the material, police said.
“We have rescued seven people from inside the debris. While the contractor at the site said that no one else is missing and all those who were trapped have been rescued, we are not taking any chances. The rescue operation is on,” Ratan said.
“Our first priority is to rescue the people and take them to hospital. Legal proceedings may follow later,” he added.
A large number of workers from the neighbouring construction sites also came to help the police in the rescue operation. Since it was already dark when the incident took place, the police had to arrange big sodium lights to carry out the rescue operation.
Despite repeated attempts, Dhiraj Jain, director of the Mahagun Group, which is constructing the mall, could not be contacted.
