The transport minister of Tripura, Manik Dey has requested Railway minister Mamata Banerjee for speedy extension of rail track from Agartala to Sabroom, a border town in South Tripura district.

Official sources said, Dey in a letter recently said, if the rail track was extended up to Sabroom the trade and commerce between Bangladesh and Tripura would go up as Chittagong port is just 70 km from there.

The transport minister also requested Banerjee for launching a new passenger train from Agartala to Dharmanagar in North Tripura district in the morning, even as three trains ply on the route.

"Now all trains in this route ply in the afternoon and a morning train is needed for convenience of the passengers," Dey said in the letter. The minister also urged an increase in the number of freight trains as there were bottlenecks for transportation of essential commodities in the hilly and insurgency-prone north eastern states.

He also urged Railway minister for providing enough security in the trains of this region as there was fear of attack by insurgents. Dey also demanded setting up of a railway recruitment board here for recruiting unemployed youths from the state.
