Angered by his wife's determination to pursue higher education despite his opposition, a man in Madurai district allegedly burnt all her books.

Saravanasundaram of Vedarpuliangulam near Madurai had been harassing his wife Abirami since their marriage in 2005, and used to assault her, listening to his parent's smear campaign against her, police said.

Abirami was doing her post-graduation in a nearby college. On April 5 last, he had beaten her for visiting a neighbour. When she said she had gone to discuss her lessons, he set fire to her books.

Saravanasundaram's parents also were against her pursuing studies, police said.

When his in-laws questioned him for burning the books, he had attacked them. On a complaint, the local All Women Police registered a case and are investigating.
