A 30-year-old con man, who looted a person posing as a cop, has been arrested from suburban Andheri, police said on Tuesday.
The accused identified as Saleem Mohammed Nabi Shaikh, a resident of Santacruz, has committed similar crimes in various police stations in the city, they said.
According to the police, on August 1, Shaikh stopped the victim Ravi Gupta (20), who was on his way to a hospital, in suburban Andheri in an auto rickshaw.
“The auto was stopped by Shaikh who later introduced himself as a policeman. On pretext of checking him, he asked the victim’s wallet and mobile phone,” a senior police official said.
“Finding something amiss, the victim shouted for help when the policemen deployed at a police chowky arrived there and caught Shaikh,” police said adding that “When Shaikh was questioned, it was learnt that he was not a cop.”
Preliminary investigation revealed that Shaikh has been booked at Santacruz, Juhu and Bandra police stations on similar charges.
Police have recovered Rs 2000 and a mobile phone from him.
