A 26-year-old man, who hacked to death his mother and maternal grandfather and two others, has been awarded death sentence.
The accused Jomon had hacked to death his mother Mary (53), grandfather Joseph (88), a neighbour Damodaran (78) and Damodaran's daughter in-law Shanta (38) on Sept 2, 2006.
Fast track court Judge KR Jinan treated the two cases separately and awarded death sentences in both the cases.
This is the first time in the country that an accused has been awarded two death sentences, Public Prosecutor MM James told PTI on Tuesday.
The accused had hacked to death his mother and grandfather while they were asleep, chopped off his mother's left arm and right leg, left the gas cylinder open and left the home. After a while, he returned and threw a lighted match inside, destroying his house.
Jomon himself was also injured and went for help to to his neighbour's house where he attacked Damodaran and his daughter-in-law as they made attempts to gather people around.
The accused was charged under various IPC sections and besides the death sentences, was awarded life sentence, and rigorous imprisonment of seven year, three year and one year separately, that would run concurrently.
