Overcome with remorse and guilt for having murdered his wife, a 26-year-old man surrendered before the Antop Hill police on Friday.
The accused, Hardeepkumar Kurmi (26), a resident of Dhobhi Ghat in Sion Koliwada, had married Preeti (20) around two years ago against his wishes.
It was an arranged marriage. Hardeepkumar, who worked as a welder, did not like his parent’s decision of fixing his marriage and resented Preeti as she was overweight and was dark.
The Antop Hill police said that Hardeepkumar, along with his brother-in-law Sanju Patel (18) murdered Preeti on January 3. On the day of the murder, Hardeepkumar and Patel took Preeti for a movie in Mumbra, and then to a cousin’s unoccupied flat at Reti Bunder.
The police said that around 2.15 am when Preeti was sleeping, Hardeepkumar and Patel allegedly gagged and strangled her. “They stuffed her body in a gunny bag and dumped it into a nearby creek at Mumbra,” said Senior Inspector Vishnu Devkar.
On January 5, Hardeepkumar’s brother, Ranjit lodged a missing complaint with the police.
Later, Hardeepkumar was overcome with guilt and confided in his mother who told him to surrender.
“Hardeepkumar surrendered on Friday,” said Devkar.
“We have booked him and Patel for murder, criminal conspiracy and destroying evidence. Patel was arrested on Friday from Vashi,” he added.
Preeti’s body has still not been recovered.
