Four years after a couple eloped and got married, a local court sentenced the husband to seven years imprisonment on charges of raping the girl, who was then a minor, overturning her plea that they were living as man and wife.

Sudhir Kumar had eloped with a sixteen year old girl of Muzaffarnagar in December, 2004. The girl’s uncle filed a case against Kumar, claiming that his niece had been raped by him.

Additional sessions judge J P Singh on Wednesday sentenced Kumar on charges of raping a minor, despite the girl stating in court that she had married him and was living with him as his wife.
