An elderly man died after taking a holy dip at Chandrabhaga near the Sun Temple of Konark, about 30 km from this temple town, on the auspicious Magha Saptami on Friday.

The 65-year old died about 15 minutes after taking the holy dip when he was sitting near the water body in wet cloth,
Superintendent of Police, Puri, Sanjay Kumar said.

Denying any stampede at the site, Kumar said "I was present at the site along with other senior officials. The victim was not caught in a melee as most devotees had left the place when he came out."

The place becomes deserted within a few minutes as devotees take bath in a limited period and the incident took place much later, the SP said.

Preliminary medical report suggested that the severe cold and cramp might have caused a heart attack resulting the death and the body was now kept at Konark hospital.

Over two lakh devotees had congregated for taking dip at Chandrabhaga as mythology suggests that Shamba, son of Lord Krishna, had been cured of leprosy after a holy dip in the water body on this day.
