Highlight Story

A MAN here has reportedly eloped with his niece, who is 15 years younger than him, leaving behind wife and a five-year-old son. The niece had been staying with the couple since she was only six years old. She is now 19, while the uncle is 35.

The man’s wife, Anita Rawat, a resident of Dhar Naka Colony, told Hindustan Times that her husband Santosh Rawat had quietly left home late night on July 24, 2006, leaving her and her son, Sunny.

She said his niece, Jaya Sankat, has also been missing from that day and alleged that they had illicit relations for at least the past two-and-half years.

Jaya’s mother had died about 13 years ago and since her father was in the Army, they brought her to Mhow to live with them. Anita said she came to know about the illicit relations two-and-a-half years back when Jaya’s younger sister told her that she had seen both of them in a compromising position.

After hearing this, Anita had confronted her husband, but the latter had beaten her up. She said she became very upset after this development and even gave up her job as a teacher in a private school of Dhar Naka area. She had thought that her presence in the house would ensure that things got sorted out, but now they have run away.

The neighbours too are in a state of shock over the development. One of them, Mahesh Ahir, said that nobody even suspected that there could be illicit relations between the two, as Rawat was a fatherly figure for the girl.

Mhow TI Ashok Rangshahi said that Anita had given a written complaint to the Mhow police station and they were trying to trace Santosh and Jaya.
