Swift action on the part of a man not only enabled him to survive an alleged attempt on his life by two unidentified motorcycle-borne youth, but he was also able to save Rs 5 lakh, besides snatch the robber's pistol.
The incident took place in the Kavi Nagar area of Ghaziabad on Monday.
Police sources said Rajnish Kumar, 35, a licenced stamp vendor, was on his way to Ghaziabad tehsil on his motorcycle.
He was also carrying a bag containing Rs 5 lakh.
On reaching Jain temple crossing in the Kavi Nagar locality, Kumar was reportedly chased by two motorcycle-borne youth.
“The two robbers snatched my bag and sped towards the railway crossing. I chased them and they fired shots to scare me. I managed to corner them near the railway crossing and after a brief scuffle, I snatched my bag and their pistol,” Kumar told Hindustan Times.
The two alleged robbers fled from the spot.
In recognition of his courageous act, Kumar was rewarded Rs 5,000 by senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal.
“We have issued directions to all police stations to trace the bike and the two robbers. The man has shown exemplary courage. Now it is our department's responsibility to supplement his good work and find the robbers. We are also helping him procure an arms licence for his own safety” the SSP said.
A case was later registered at the Kavi Nagar police station against the two robbers for attempt to murder and loot.
Meanwhile, the pistol snatched by Kumar contained five live cartridges.
