Man forced wife to drink poison, alleges her family

india Updated: Sep 22, 2009 01:38 IST

The family of a 27-year-old woman, who died on September 18, has alleged that her husband and in-laws had forced her to drink poison.

The family has also accused the police of not taking any action against the accused.

Nisha (27) had married Mahesh Prajapati (34), who has a construction business, in 2001.

The couple used to stay with Mahesh’s parents — Meghji (65) and Meena (60) at Charai in Thane (West) and had two children — Yashashree (7) and Karthik (5).

“Mahesh had asked my mother for money but she refused. He then threatened her that he would leave Nisha. A few days later, Nisha called up mother asking for money,” said Nisha’s sister Prateeksha Prajapati (25).

Mahesh used to abuse Nisha, alleged her mother Poonam (46).

On September 18, Mahesh asked Poonam to rush to his residence. When she reached, she found Nisha dead.

Her family filed a case the same day at Naupada police station.

“We suspect that Nisha was forced to drink poison. But the police have not arrested the accused nor have they told us the cause of her death. They have not yet sent her viscera to the laboratory,” said Poonam.

“A police officer told us that they were busy with Navratri and will arrest the accused only after the festival is over,” she added.

“Our investigations have revealed that the deceased was physically and mentally tortured. I have directed the police officers to arrest the accused at the earliest,” said Assistant Police Commissioner (Naupada division, Zone I) RS Tadvi.
