A local court here sentenced a man to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs five thousand on him for murdering his wife.

The court sentenced Kalyan Limkar (36) to life for murdering his wife Sunita by setting her ablaze.

The couple, who had a son, was said to be having marital problems, with Kalyan accusing Sunita of having a bad character.

On the evening of February 22, 2007, when Sunita returned home from the farm, there were heated arguments between the two, following which, Kalyan poured kerosene on his wife, set her ablaze and fled.

Sunita was taken to a rural hospital by neighbours where she died while undergoing treatment.

Her dying declaration was recorded twice at the hospital on the basis of which the police filed a case of torture and murder against Kalyan.

The fine of Rs five thousand would be given to Sunita's parents as per the court order.
