A 46-year-old woman hammered her husband, a former army man, to death after a quarrel early on Friday at their Mira Road home.
The police said that after hitting Mangal Singh (54) repeatedly with a hammer, Neetu Singh (46) went to sleep. Both husband and wife had reportedly been drinking before the incident. Mangal was an abusive husband, the police said.
“The couple, both alcoholics, had a fight on Thursday night after which Mangal went off to sleep. Neetu, however, attacked Mangal on his head and face with a hammer several times while the lights were switched off,” said Senior Inspector Mukund Mahajan of the Mira Road police. “She then went off to sleep.”
At 9.30 am, Neetu reportedly told the society watchman that Mangal was not making any movements. “The watchman informed society members who went to check and saw blood splattered all over their flat,” a police officer said. “Mangal’s face had been hammered and he had lost his left eye.”
Neetu told the police that she was not in her senses and after assaulting Mangal did not check on his condition.
She was arrested on charges of murder.
Residents of the society claim that the couple was a nuisance.
“They often quarrelled as Mangal used to drink and splurge. At 5 am (on Friday), the milkman told me over the intercom that Neetu was sleeping outside my flat and their flat was unlocked. When I went out at 7 am, she had moved from there,” said Nital Shah, a neighbour. “However, at 9.30 am, when I returned home after dropping my daughter to her tuition class, I saw Neetu washing her hands and there were blood stains on the walls.”
