A 30-year-old man was arrested from Bandra on Thursday, for allegedly paying two people to throw acid on a 25-year-old woman who worked as a singer in a Bandra bar. The victim, Jamuna Bose, was going to her Chembur flat when the acid was thrown at her on Tuesday. She sustained 20% burns.

Deputy commissioner of police, Aswati Dorje (zone 5) said, “We arrested Machindra Gore alias Mangat, for paying the duo to throw acid. We have detained few of his friends for questioning.”

Gore, a clerk with an advocate in Bandra, would frequent the Sibbu Palace Bar in Kherwadi, where Jamuna worked, said the Dharavi police.

“Over the past few weeks, Gore felt that Jamuna was not giving him any attention. He suspected that she was avoiding him because he had not been giving her good tips,” Dorje said.

“We suspect it was this jealousy that led him to plan an attack,” said Prabhakar Satam, assistant commissioner of police, Kurla division. The police are on the lookout for the two accused who carried out the attack. Gore was presented before the local court and has been remanded in police custody till April 11.
