A 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly setting his 12-year-old stepdaughter afire at Dumarkhan Khurd village of Jind district on Saturday. The accused has been identified as Sant Sharan, a migrant labourer from Uttar Pardesh.

The police booked Sharan, who worked at a brick-kiln, on the compliant of victim's brother, Nathu.

On Friday night, when the victim was sleeping, the accused woke her up and took her to another room and first made a bid to electrocute her. He then sprinkled kerosene on the victim and set her afire. The accused fled from the spot after the minor victim started screaming in pain, which caught the attention of other migrants living nearby. The victim was rushed to Narwana civil hospital, from where she was referred to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, where she was declared brought dead.

On the motive behind the incident, DSP Rameshwar Lamba said, “According to preliminary investigation, the accused was annoyed with his stepdaughter as she used to prevent him from venting his anger at her mother.”

The accused had married the wife of his elder brother, who died around six years ago.
