Man hugs lover after setting himself ablaze

india Updated: Dec 11, 2007 17:33 IST

A man, separated from his lover, barged into her house and hugged her after setting himself ablaze here, leaving both of them injured.

Venkat Raju had a love affair with the daughter of a Telugu film producer, for whom he worked as a driver, and eloped with her two months ago to Jamshedpur.

A state police team had brought the couple back a few days ago after which the girl was sent to her parents' Banjara Hills residence, police said.

Unable to bear the separation, he poured kerosene on himself at the producer's residence last night and then hugged his lover.

"I have decided to end my life unable to bear the separation," he said.

While the man sustained 40 per cent burns and was admitted to the Osmania General Hospital, the girl escaped with minor injuries.

Raju claimed that he feared for the lives of his parents from the producer.

The Banjara Hills police registered a case of attempt to murder against him.

In recent times, a number of incidents of frustrated lovers attacking their lovers were reported in the state.

In Srikakulam district, a lecturer threw acid on his lover, while a college principal allegedly tried to outrage the modesty of a student.

In Anantapur district, another desperate lover tried to tie the knot with his girlfriend in an examination hall.
