The Sessions court on Saturday convicted a 32-year-old man of raping a 51-year-old woman in 2006. The accused Rahul Gaikwad, a resident of Badhwar Park in Colaba was employed with a private firm. He was a friend of victim’s son.
Gaikwad has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment.
The woman, who worked as a domestic help, had sought Gaikwad’s help after her son was arrested on October 3, 2006, for his alleged involvement in a road rage case, as per the chargesheet filed by the police.
The police said that Gaikwad accompanied the woman to the police station where they met her son. By the time they left the Colaba police station, it was too late and he offered to drop her back home.
The police said that instead of taking her home, Gaikwad led her to a secluded spot and raped her. Subsequently, she fled from the spot and headed towards a nearby building where one of her employers stayed.
Her employer, in turn, escorted her to the Colaba police station where the rape victim lodged a complaint.
During the trial, the prosecution examined nine witnesses, including police officials and medical experts.
The medical report confirmed that the woman had been raped. The rape victim herself stood by her complaint and narrated the sequence of events. The court accepted the prosecution’s argument and convicted Gaikwad.
