A 30-year-old married man, Sonu Tyagi, disturbed by allegations of rape by his neighbour committed suicide on Wednesday afternoon. The incident was reported from Domai area of Hapur. Tyagi died at a hospital in Meerut where he had been taken to for treatment.
Tyagi took the drastic step after a 40-year-old married woman, a mother of four children, went to the police and alleged that Tyagi had raped her, police officials said.
"She said that the man had entered her house while she was bathing and had allegedly raped her. We told her to lodge an FIR in the case, but both the parties reached a compromise. Her allegations were found to be false since the matter was related to a minor altercation as both the families belong to different groups in the area," circle officer (CO) Kapil Dev Singh told Hindustan Times.
However, when Tyagi came to know of the allegations levelled against him by the woman, he couldn't bear it and consumed several tablets of Sulphos out of fear of police action. He was later rushed to a private nursing home at Hapur.
"He was referred to a private hospital at Meerut where he was declared dead after treatment late on Wednesday night. The allegations of rape had left him disturbed and he had consumed poison," CO added.
Police officials on Thursday said that a case was registered against the woman, her husband and another person under sections 304 and 328 of IPC after the victim's uncle lodged an FIR.
