A man killed his wife with a baseball bat and hit his seven-year-old son and a 14-year-old nephew before consuming poison, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in New Palam Vihar area on Saturday when Mahavir Kumar, 39, started beating her wife following an argument. When the couple’s son and a nephew tried to intervene, the accused hit them and tried to commit suicide. According to police, the accused was taken to a hospital where his condition is critical. His wife Sudesh Devi, 36, died on the spot due to multiple injuries on her legs, waist and other parts of her body.

Mahavir is working as a consultant in a private firm in Gurgaon. His family lives in Rohtak. On Saturday, he had an altercation with his wife who had gone to Haridwar along with her son Vanshul and nephew Kaushal without informing him.

Both the children were rescued by the neighbours who also informed the victim's family in Sonipat district. The deceased's father and brother have lodged a complaint, a police official said.

"A base ball bat smeared with blood was also found from the scene. The children have been sent for treatment," said Abhay Singh Rao, DCP west, Gurgaon.

A police official said, "The accused is still unconscious and we are waiting for his recovery. The couple had a strained relationship for long time.”
