An impoverished father in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh was forced to pledge his two minor daughters with a money lender for defaulting on a loan of Rs. 34,000.

The girls, aged 16 and 5, had a harrowing time for over three months as the money lender made them toil in the fields during the “bondage” period. The police said the older child even complained of molestation attempts by the money lender.

What makes the case more tragic is that the money lender Nara Jahangir is the paternal uncle of the girls.

The police rescued the girls on Friday following a tip-off about the girls’ plight by one of the villagers.

The girls’ father told a local news channel that he had borrowed Rs. 34,000 from Jahangir six months ago to meet some urgent family needs but could not pay in time.

Jahangir was pressuring him to repay the loan and had even threatened him. To get Jahangir off his back, he agreed to leave the two girls as “security” with him.

“We have arrested Jahangir, he was produced in a court on Saturday and sent to judicial remand,” Karimnagar SP Viswanath Ravinder told HT.

The children were handed over to the district child protection officer, the SP added.

Jahangir, a blacksmith, has been booked for bonded labour, wrongful confinement and criminal force on women with intent to outrage their modesty, the SP said.

Woman raped on bus, 3 arrested
The Madhya Pradesh police arrested three persons, including a bus driver and conductor, on Saturday for alleged gangrape of a woman on Friday.

The police have arrested the three accused, Zahid (30), conductor Lala (22) and Rajesh (25).

The 38-year-old woman had boarded the bus at Dewas after she had a fight with her husband, said Tukoganj police station in-charge Majoj Ratnakar. When the bus reached Indore, all passengers barring the woman got off and that is when she was raped, police said.
