He suddenly disappeared 11 years ago leaving his pregnant wife and infant daughter in the lurch. His father blamed his wife for “kidnapping and murdering” him.
But on Monday, the crime branch of Odisha Police found Gajendra Kumar Kar (44) from Berhampur, about 200km south of Bhubaneswar. “Allegations of kidnapping and murder are proved to be false,” crime branch superintendent of police Ramesh Behera said on Tuesday.
A native of Berhampur, Kar had been working in a five star hotel in Puri. In 1999, he blew up more than a lakh borrowed from people to celebrate his one-year-old daughter’s birthday. When the loan burden spiralled, he fled Puri in 2002.
Kar did not return for the next five years and his father filed a complaint against his hapless wife in a Puri court. The court initially asked the local police to take up investigation and later in 2010 handed the case over to the crime branch.
Finding no evidence of murder, the crime branch treated Kar as a missing person and declared a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for information on him.
A team of crime branch officers finally nabbed him after getting information that he had returned to Berhampur from Goa on June 1. Kar told the crime branch that after leaving Puri, he worked in restaurants in Pune, Mumbai and Goa.
