A man who received critical head injuries has regrown a portion of his damaged skull. Shambhunath Roy, an electrician of Chuadanga village in West Bengal’s Nadia district had fallen 25 feet after his head accidentally came in contact with an 11000 volt electric line while he was stringing lights for a Kali puja podium.
He was unconscious for about 24 hours after admission to the hospital here on October 30 last year. The skin where his head came in contact with the high voltage line began peeling off 15 days later and after two months an eight inch piece of skull bone fell off exposing the brain.
“I had advised the hospital staff to dress his head carefully after a portion of his skull came off exposing the brain. But we were astounded when the skull bone began growing back,” said Dr Ratanlal Banerjee who attended the patient.
“It is a rare case in medical science and a matter of research,” said hospital superintendent Dr Nirupam Biswas. “Regrowth of one to two inch has been heard of but that of such a large size must be a rare case.” The patient will return home in two to three months, Biswas said.
