The beheaded body of an unidentified man was found at a Kali temple in a village about five km away from the university town of Visva-Bharati in Birbhum district on Thursday morning.

The man was apparently beheaded on the new moon night of Wednesday, the last night of the Bengali year.

The police have detained a local liquor-seller Lalmohan Hansda, as the sniffer dog stopped in front of his house. The priest of the temple found the naked body of the victim, a few feet away from the sacrificial alter. The head was lying about 25 feet away.

The police claimed to have discovered marks of injury on the head. Although district police chief Rabindranath Mukherjee said, “There are indications that it’s a planned murder”, villagers insisted since the head was severed cleanly, it indicated human sacrifice.
