Police in Jharkhand have arrested one Khudu Karmkar, 50, resident of remote Sawalapur village in Sahebganj district’s Taljhari police station area, around 500 km north east of capital Ranchi on Friday evening for human sacrifice.
Karmakar is alleged to have sacrificed a five-year-old infant girl who was his younger brother Madhu Karmkar’s daughter from the same village.
The local Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislature, Lobin Hembrum, who visited the spot Friday evening told Hindustan Times on Saturday that Karmakar had been an accused of human sacrifice in the past too. “In 2000 he had sacrificed a minor girl at Radhanagar village, also in Sahebganj district. He was later arrested and awarded imprisonment by a local district and session court.” Hembrom said Karmakar managed to get bail four years later.
The officer-in-charge of Taljhari police station, Rajiv Ranjan said police recovered the infant’s decomposed body, identified to be that of his younger brother’s daughter, from a local pond after being tipped off by villagers. “It appears that the girl had been brutally murdered about two or three days back. We have arrested Khudu Karmkar,” he added.
The victim’s father, Madhu Karmkar has lodged an FIR against his brother, police said.
Police superintendent A Vijayalaxmi said the accused has not confessed to the crime yet. “We have picked him on the bass of the FIR and his past record.”
Hembrum said that he rushed to the spot immediately when he came to know about the incident. “The accused is highly superstitious and practices black magic in the area where people are highly superstitious.” He said, demanding capital punishment.”
Sources said that there was a marriage function on Wednesday night in the village and the girl was missing since then. The victim’s family informed the police only on Friday when her body was seen in a local pond.
