A court in Chandigarh on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his minor step-daughter for four years.
A fine of Rs.500,000 was also slapped on Chander Pal, 35, who lives in a slum in the union territory of Chandigarh.
The case was detected in October last year when their neighbour reported to the police after seeing the young girl pregnant. Chander Pal was then arrested for raping his step-daughter, who later gave birth to a girl. A DNA test confirmed that Pal was the father of the child.
"Chander Pal started raping his daughter when his wife committed suicide after coming to know about his illicit relations with some other woman. His step-daughter also become pregnant and gave birth to a girl child," said the prosecution lawyer.
Pal married Sarita, mother of the girl, around 11 years ago. Sarita was a divorcee and had a four-year-old daughter but later she committed suicide and since then her daughter was living with Pal. He raped the step-daughter continuously for four years, said a police official.
However, Pal denied the allegations, claiming the girl was above 18 years and he had married her.
Both the young mother and her child, who is now three months old, are now lodged in a women's home.
