Upset with his wife for leaving home after a tiff and living with her aunt in Kalwa, a 21-year-old autorickshaw driver allegedly set the physically-challenged aunt on fire in a fit of rage.
The police have arrested Ravi Gupta, a resident of Balajinagar in Kalwa, and charged him with attempt to murder.
Gupta and Durga (19) had a love marriage eight months ago.
“We used to have constant fights because he suspected me of having an affair. He would even beat me. So, I came to my aunt, Shantibai Kurade’s house,” said Durga.
“Last month, Durga moved in with her aunt, who lives alone,” said senior police inspector of Kalwa police station Arun Sonde. “On Wednesday, Gupta came to Kurade’s house to take his wife back home. But an argument broke out and Durga stormed out. When Kurade tried to intervene, an angry Gupta doused her with kerosene and set her ablaze,” he added.
When Kurade started screaming for help, Durga rushed back inside the house, doused the fire and rushed her aunt to the hospital.
Kurade, who sustained 78% burn injuries, is undergoing treatment at Thane Civil Hospital.
Gupta was produced in court on Thursday and remanded in police custody until October 25.
