A moneylender with a Rs 32 lakh cheque in his pocket was shot dead by an unknown gunman on Monday in Srinagar, ostensibly because of the prejudice against the profession to which he belonged.
The man, identified as Mohammad Afzal Khan, lived in Neharpora village, about 50 km north of Srinagar, and ran a grocery shop in the town.
He was shot in the head at around 2:20 pm outside the Press Enclave in Lal Chowk. Eyewitnesses said a person in a black shirt shot Khan.
"Investigations reveal he had no political links. A cheque for R32 lakh was found in his pocket," the police said
