A nightmare full of superstition turned Anil Kumar Jha's life upside down when a divine voice ordered him to prick pins into his body in order to cure his handicapped daughter.
Over a period of ten years, Anil Kumar Jha has pierced hundreds of pins and sewing needles pricked into his body. By now his hands, legs, belly buttocks have dozens of pins. Doctors say that his is the first case of its kind in the history of medical science and that it's a miracle that the man is still alive!
He was admitted to the hospital when recently two pins in his chest broke the lung wall and fluid formed in the pleural cavity.
Anil was rushed to hospitals in Delhi and Chennai but was not admitted. Later, he was taken to Lucknow from Jhansi.
The nightmare began when Anil dreamt that if he pierced his body with pins, his handicapped daughter would be cured. He claims that a divine voice had ordered him to do such a strange penance.
Now, from last ten years he has been piercing at least one needle inside his body every week. Interestingly, Anil says that his penance caused gradual improvement in his daughter's health. Thereafter, he reduced the practice to once a month.
Doctors, on being quizzed, said it is surprising that his body tissues accepted the foreign bodies without causing septic. He used to pierce the needles and pins under his epidermis or upper skin. Many needles are still lying in his body in an inert state.
With Minimal Access Surgery (MAS) and Thorascopy, surgeons Dr Vinod Jain, Dr Akhilesh Majhi and Dr Sandeep Tewari at King George's Medical University have taken out about half a dozen pins from his lungs giving him a new lease of life. Doctors are still worried about many other pins inside his other body parts.
According to doctors of the Neuro Surgery Department and department of Psychiatry, pin piercing was the result of schizophrenia.
Rumours also are that before adopting this method of penance, Anil used to haunt cremation grounds to worship skulls.
